POGO Satellite Program

POGO’s Provincial Pediatric Oncology Satellite Program transfers aspects of a child’s care, for eligible patients, to a community hospital closer to home. POGO Satellite Clinics are located in areas where the caseload is large enough to maintain the expertise needed, and where patient travel, cost and family disruption will be reduced. All children will continue to be diagnosed in tertiary programs which will develop, monitor and modify their individual treatment plans throughout the course of their care.

The POGO Satellite Program:

  • Selects and develops satellite sites, increasing each community hospital’s capacity to provide complex cancer treatment
  • Evaluates satellite sites on an ongoing basis to ensure that the care provided is equivalent to the care provided by tertiary care centres
  • Enables Ontario’s five hospitals with specialized childhood cancer programs (tertiary centres) to increase their capacity to provide more complex treatment and/or monitoring
  • Updates community hospital operational standards and guideline documents
  • Provides frequent educational opportunities for staff, including POGO Satellite Education Days

“The bottom line is that services provided closer to home enable a family to have more support from family and friends. They are able to sleep in their own beds, be surrounded by their own community and be together as a family unit; many of the things that add up to normalcy and quality of life.”
– Vicky Wilton, POGO Interlink Nurse
